GILDING CONSERVATION
 on Wood, Metals, & Porcelain

On his first study trip of several months in Florence, Doug learned that applying gold leaf to a surface successfully was just the beginning. The time, skill and artistry is in patinating a surface to the desired appearance of antiquity. He rarely re-gild objects. Usually, there is enough of the original underneath to be enhanced and blended after consolidating and cleaning
the existing substrate of any later coatings.

Doug is also skilled at the techniques of faux fire or mercury gilding used on English brass from the 18th century onward. He is also able to cold gild porcelain precisely matching the lost burnished surface.
